Lung Cancer Awareness Month
November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. According to the National Cancer Institute, lung cancer was the leading cause of cancer death in 2018. This information may comes as a surprise to many, as a lung cancer diagnosis comes with a stigma that has an adverse effect on patients.
The American Lung Association shares the stigma associated with lung cancer is a result of "less resources, support and public empathy than many other diseases have." Since smoking is indicated as one of the causes of lung cancer, many people believe that those with lung cancer caused their own cancer. This stigma can further isolate patients and enact feelings of guilt, fear or blame, which can cause poor health outcomes in lung cancer patients.
