Why thrill in playgrounds?
Free range kids may be an extinct species.
Research shows that a combination of urban-
ization and parental risk averseness results
in restricted ranges of mobility for even older
children today. Today’s risk averseness is vis-
ible in many public playgrounds, being dulled
down in fear of litigation. Swings and other
wild movements are left out when planning.
Spinning equipment is bolted down to prevent
it from rotating1!
Play scientists fear that this trend causes even
more physical inactivity, and may even cause
emotional conditions such as anxiety2. KOMPAN PLAY INSTITUTE
