Letter from the Director
I spend a lot of time watching and thinking about birds and not just
because the Kingfisher Institute is named for one. At the beginning of the
long pandemic winter, I set up my deck to attract birds so I could have
living beings around me every day, no matter the news. A pair of downy
woodpeckers visited often, along with nuthatches and chickadees and
others. On the day after Christmas, in search of more birds and some
open space, I drove south about an hour to a wildlife refuge in northwest
Missouri. There, on a relatively mild winter day, I witnessed something
amazing. I saw over 200 bald eagles. For four hours, there was never
a moment that an eagle was not in view.
I share this story because I took a great lesson from it. With the help of our
advisory council, the Kingfisher Institute has refined its mission statement
