Think of a bell, a very large bell, the sort with a clapper that can ring out
loud. Chances are you probably just thought of the Liberty Bell (if you’re American)
or Big Ben (if you come from anywhere else).
Did you know that they were both cast in a foundry in the East End of London,
that until two years ago had been casting bells big and small for hundreds of years on
or near the same site? The Whitechapel Bell Foundry began casting in 1571 and the
Cockneys, who are born within the sound of Bow Bells, owe some of their identity to
this foundry as it cast those very bells.
