Telling Stories
When I meet alumni and friends of Penn’s School of Social Policy & Practice (SP2), I delight in
their stories of the School — innumerable friendships, life-changing field placements, and profes-
sors whose work opened new perspectives. So often, these stories are the driving force behind
their decision to give back to SP2 as donors to the Annual Fund. Reading this year’s One Book,
One SP2 selection, DisabilityVisibility: First-Person Stories from the Twenty-First Century, a collection of
essays edited by activist Alice Wong in 2020, I was struck by the many allusions to the importance
of storytelling.These begin in the opening quotation:
